Texas Culture Wars and Voter Suppression

Civil rights activists in Texas call on D.C. legislators to break the gridlock on national voting rights before it is too late to stop “American apartheid.”

Six months after the January 6th Insurrection, Texas Governor Greg Abbott calls a special legislative session to pass new voting restrictions and to push the GOP culture war. Texas already has some of the most restrictive voting laws in the nation and it could get much worse. Also on the agenda is a long list of culture war bills to fire up the MAGA mob and right-wing conservatives.

“Texas is the toughest state in which to vote,” says O’Rourke. (A recent study from Northern Illinois University came to the same conclusion.) “This election bill would take it to a place so far removed from democracy that it would beg the question: What kind of form of government would we have?”

“It’s a matter of weeks or maybe a couple of months that are left to us before I think it becomes hard to preserve free and fair elections in the 2022 election cycle throughout much of the country,” says O’Rourke.
