The Heartless Politics of Mitch McConnell
Mitch McConnell, the self-proclaimed “Grim Reaper” of the Senate, is calling in personal favors to block the January 6 Commission, despite last minute pleas from mother of slain Capitol Police Office Brian Sicknick. The GOP is raising millions on the Big Lie of election fraud and McConnell has made a cold-hearted political calculation that a bipartisan commission will hurt Republicans in the 2022 midterm elections.

McConnell seemed to lock up the 41 votes against that he needed despite a last-minute pro-commission lobbying push by the mother and girlfriend of fallen Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, who died after responding to the siege. Collins and Murkowski were among the Republicans they met.
(Sen.) Murkowski recalled meeting with the women close to Sicknick after they spoke with a senator who opposed the commission; she told them she was “heartsick that you feel that you need to come and advocate to members of Congress.”
